Russell was in line for a top-10 finish at Imola, but the now 23-year-old crashed into the barriers after trying to get heat into his tyres.
The Williams driver missed out on his first Formula One points as a result of the mistake.
Russell returns to the same track this weekend for this season’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, where the Briton has said he will try to make amends for his previous error.
“I made what is probably the biggest mistake of my career at Imola in 2020 when crashing under the Safety Car,” Russell said, per Planet F1.
“It’s a track where, if you make a mistake, you’re out. But that’s what racing should be about!
“I’ll look to try and rectify my mistake from last year with a good result this weekend.”
Russell filled in for compatriot Lewis Hamilton at last season’s Sakhir Grand Prix, qualifying second for Mercedes and finishing ninth after an error by team mechanics cost the Briton after he had led for the majority of the race.
The ninth-placed finish secured Russell his first F1 points.
