Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

While an air conditioning unit and a desk fan will have you covered when you’re sweltering at home, what is a hot and bothered person to do when they start roasting on the Tube or melting on the high street? The solution is simple, it seems: neck fans.

When a handheld device falls short of what you need on the hottest days of the year (or you don’t happen to have a hand free to clutch onto a handheld fan all day), convenient wearable models make it easy to keep your cool, wherever you are.

Resting around your neck like a pair of headphones, a neck fan could be a game changer on balmy days, creating a refreshing breeze to keep you cool. Owing to neck fans’ lightweight designs, pocket-friendly pricing and hours’ worth of battery life, it’s no surprise they’re becoming popular accessories for summer.

Our tester has reviewed a range of fans, and, better still, has tried out one from brand Cozii that will set you back less than £20.

Whether you’re heading to a barbecue, al fresco party, or merely want to make the morning commute a little more pleasant, here’s everything you need to know about the portable neck fan.

Our reviewer praised this device for being “an affordable way to make life more comfortable”. With a full charge, you can enjoy up to nine hours of battery life, while four settings enable you to create a gentle breeze or “ramp up the freshness when the midday sun is at its most powerful”.

Plus, thanks to the streamlined, minimal design, as well as the fact it’s relatively quiet (31dB), it’s not as obvious as you might think. “We like that it cools the neck and face constantly and find that it’s more effective than a handheld fan,” our tester said, adding that the other advantage of wearing a fan as opposed to holding one is “you’re free to take photos, eat and drink and enjoy summer socialising”.
