From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. With the third national lockdown coinciding with the bleak mid-winter and the majority of us working from home for the foreseeable, it is now more important than ever to make sure our living spaces are cosy and warm.
But, while cranking the central heating up to full blast will certainly keep you toasty, warming up your entire house is likely to have a major impact on your energy bill.

In a bid to save precious pennies, many have considered investing in a portable heater which can help warm up localised spots around the home.
The issue here is that, while they will save you money in the long-run, most electric heaters are expensive with high-end gadgets like Dyson’s popular hot and cool fans costing almost £600.
The good news is that you don’t have to spend a fortune to transform the temperature of your home because Lidl has launched an affordable version that promises to take the nip out of the air.
Costing just £49.99, the heater will be available to buy in Lidl stores from Sunday 21 February and is the latest product to join the budget supermarket’s smart home range that launched last year, which includes everything from light bulbs to plugs that can be controlled from your phone.
The bargain heater has a host of impressive features normally only seen in pricier versions and we predict it will sell out quickly when it hits stores this weekend. Whether you want to get your hands on one to use as your primary heat source to as a top-up in chillier rooms, here’s everything you need to know about Lidl’s smart heater.
You can trust our independent round-ups. We may earn commission from some of the retailers, but we never allow this to influence selections, which are formed from real-world testing and expert advice. This revenue helps to fund journalism across The Independent.
Silvercrest smart ceramic fan heater: £49.99, Lidl.co.uk
If you're feeling the chill while working from home, then this new heater might come in handy.
It cleverly connects to Lidl’s smart home system using wifi and can be controlled from a phone or remote control with ease, meaning you can adjust the temperature and power from the comfort of the sofa.
The heater also features 3D air circulation, which claims to deliver an even room temperature and there are two heat settings to choose from as well as a timer function of two, four or eight hours for added control.
Other features include the option to tilt and oscillate the heater so it hits exactly where you want it to and it gives you real value for money as it doubles up as a cooling fan that can be used during the summer months too.
If you’re willing to splurge on a more expensive version though, we recommend the Dyson pre hot + cool purifying fan heater (£549, Dyson.co.uk), which featured in our round-up of the best portable heaters.
Our reviewer said that, while the fan is pricey, it gets room temperature “just right, all year round with both fan and heat settings”.
“What’s more, it’ll improve the air quality thanks to its carbon filter which is great news for asthmatics and hay fever sufferers,” they added. “The output is impressive in heating mode, quickly directing a jet of warm air into (or oscillating 350 degrees around) the room. In a world of ugly portables, this is beautiful to look at and can be controlled with its remote or via the Dyson app too.”
It also landed a spot in our review of the best cooling fans, so we can certainly vouch for it being a great investment.
