Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Alas, we can’t all be on a permanent summer holiday, but a well-chosen scent can conjure images of sunnier climes sun cream, turquoise sea, Mediterranean cliff-top villages in the familiar comfort of your home. Our summery picks are a delicious combination of zesty and refreshing, warm and breezy and sensuous and evocative.

They’re potent too, which means the scent disperses or throws well around the room; many (though not all) cheaper candles smell great in the jar but don’t reach far when you light them at home. So while our top picks may feel pricey, you’ll get more scent for your money, and they all burn for at least 40 hours, some as many as 60.

Burn your candle for at least two hours at a time (and maximum four to help it last), until the wax has melted in a pool across the surface, to help it burn down evenly rather than the wick burrowing down and leaving wax up the sides of the jar.

If your candle gives off black smoke when you light it and leaves sooty residue up the side of the glass, it’s because you need to trim the wick before burning. You can buy fancy clippers to do it, or else just use a sharp pair of scissors.

We burned each candle for at least two hours to observe how evenly they burned, how far the scent dispersed and how long it lasted once the candle had been blown out; all our favourites were still perceptible in our flat hours after we'd finished burning.

You can trust our independent reviews. We may earn commission from some of the retailers, but we never allow this to influence selections, which are formed from real-world testing and expert advice. This revenue helps us to fund journalism across The Independent.
