Fun and thoughtful gifts to show dad you care without spending half your salary
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Yes, your dad's a hero, but there's no need to go over the top and spend all your hard-earned pennies. We've hunted down the best Father's Day bargains so you can say thank you and still eat for the rest of the month. It's the thought that counts, after all.
1. Plants From Seed Grow Your Own Coffee Plant Kit: £9.95, notonthehighstreet.com
Caffeine-loving and gardening dads alike will go for this clever little kit, which contains everything he’ll need to grow his own coffee plant – of the Arabica Nana variety – from seed, including pots, grow pellets and those all-important seeds. When it’s fully grown, the plant produces first white flowers, then fruit, which turns from green, to red, to black as it ripens.
2. The Chocolate Society Milk Chocolate Caramelised Pecan Nuts: £9.99, selfridges.com
Any bar or box from the Somerset-based luxe chocolatier is a sure-to-please gift, but somehow chocolate-covered nuts just say ‘dad’ like nothing else. Our pick is these caramelised pecans, which are coated in French Valrhona milk chocolate – some of the finest premium chocolate in the world.
3. Burgon & Ball Seeds and Stuff Tin: £8.95, johnlewis.com
If your dad is the green-fingered type, this enamel tin is sure to take pride of place, whether it’s in the shed, the greenhouse, down the allotment or on the window sill. There’s plenty of space to keep all those gardening bits and pieces – seeds, twine, scissors, dibbers and pot labels – together and tidy.
4. Hook, Line and Sinker Flies Enamel Mug: £9.95, bloomsburystore.com
The colourful fishing fly print on this enamel mug will be a hit with anglers, plus it’s sturdy enough to bung in his rucksack for a cuppa on the river bank while he waits for something to take the bait.
5. Table Tennis Set: £9.95, dotcomgiftshop.com
Transform the dinner table into a tennis court with this bargain set, which includes a net, brackets, two bats, three balls, and the rules, so there’ll be no point disputes mid tournament. Plus, while it may technically be a present for dad, he can’t play alone, so you get to enjoy the spoils, too.
6. Happy Socks Optic Socks: £8, asos.com
Ok, so socks aren’t an original pressie, but a bloke can never have too many pairs. Happy Socks’ designs are bright, comfortable (they’re cotton-mix) and come in loads of colours with patterns available in various levels of flamboyancy. These geometric print ones in red, white and navy are eye-catching but not too out-there.
7. Gemma Correll Coasters: £2.50 each, ohhdeer.com
If your dad enjoys a good pun, these coasters from illustrator Gemma Correll will make him chuckle. Our favourites are the ‘Gangster Wrap’ and the ‘Spoiled Milk’ but there are others to choose from. They are currently on offer so you could get four for a tenner.
8. Legless Corkscrew: £9.95, notonthehighstreet.com
This will do all the jobs he needs – ease out corks, cut foil and open beer – but the peg-legged pirate design with a parrot on its shoulder makes this one a conversation-starter.
9. Bike Trumps: £5.99, zavvi.com
For the MAMIL who has everything and a lifelong appreciation of bikes, these cards will put his cycling knowledge to the test, remind him of past design classics - and make him very grateful that Penny Farthings are no longer an option.
10. Now TV Entertainment Month Pass: £6.99, nowtv.com
If you think your dad would enjoy the likes of Game of Thrones and Entourage but he won’t fork out for Sky, then consider treating him to a Now TV subscription. With its entertainment package, he’ll get 13 channels not on Freeview – from Sky Atlantic to Comedy Central – to watch on any device that uses apps, or a smart TV. Sign him up for a month and watch your favourite shows together.
Verdict:
There's something here for caffeine-addicts, fishermen, gardeners and car enthusiasts alike, but the Grow Your Own Coffee Plant kit is our favourite choice for something he'd never guess was less than a tenner. If that's not his cup of tea (or coffee), we love the Gemma Correll coasters for dads with a sense of humour, while, for the man who has everything, you can't go wrong with some premium chocolate.
