As we hop joyfully towards spring, with lighter evenings and the promise of sun-kissed days ahead, it’s time to start thinking about Easter celebrations, including which wines to turn to when it comes to choosing scrumptious pairings for upcoming feasts.

While there is a raft of traditional Easter dishes, whatever you bring to the table, there will be a wine on this list for you. We have tried, tested and selected our favourite picks with spring in mind, from quality-driven reds and rosés to brilliant bubbles and gastronomic whites.

So, leave the depths of winter behind, add a bottle (or two) to your basket, and enjoy sipping this spring.

London Cru pinot noir, 2022

London Cru pinot noir, 2022
  • Best: Overall
  • ABV: 11.5%
  • Size: 75cl
  • Grape: Pinot noir précoce, pinot noir
  • Vegan: Yes
  • Region: Sussex, England
  • Why we love it
    • UK grown
    • Makes for a great conversation piece over dinner

There is so much to say about this wine – not only is it from the UK’s first urban winery (Fulham’s London Cru), using grapes grown in Sussex, it is one of the best (if not the best) expressions of what a brilliantly crafted UK still wine can be.

Crafted by winemaker extraordinaire, Alex Hurley, and fuelled by delicate extraction, elegance and vibrancy, this pinot noir has crunchy bright red cranberry and raspberry character, a touch of smokiness and very light tannins. A perfect red wine to pair with fish, particularly salmon, or to chill slightly and enjoy in the sunshine.

The Wine Society cava brut reserva, 2021

The-society’s-cava-indybest
  • Best: Budget wine for Easter
  • ABV: 12%
  • Size: 75cl
  • Grape: Parellada, macabeo, xarel-lo and chardonnay
  • Vegan: Yes
  • Region: Penedès, Spain
  • Why we love it
    • Affordable
    • Versatile

Holy moly! This sparkling wine is outrageously delicious for the price. Park those preconceptions about cava and get your hands on a bottle of this. This wine is brought to us by a small family estate, exclusively for The Wine Society. It’s a traditionally made, bottle-fermented and aged blend of cava grapes – parellada, macabeo and xarel-lo – plus some chardonnay to add finesse.

The generous fruit (think apple, pear, and orchard fruit) notes, creamy complexity and fine mousse combine to make this a perfect tipple for Easter morning, especially when paired with a scrumptious hot cross bun.

The Wine Society Vanguardist la petite vanguard grenache, 2022

Vanguard-red-wine-indybest
  • Best: Wine to pair with lamb
  • ABV: 12.9%
  • Size: 75cl
  • Grape: Grenache/garnacha
  • Vegan: No
  • Region: McLaren Vale, Australia
  • Why we love it
    • A wine worthy of the main course
    • Juicy

The Wine Society has done it again, bringing us this juicy little number from McLaren Vale in Australia. Spring lamb doesn’t call for big, bold, plush reds. When cooked well, it can be more delicate and vibrant with lots of herbs, calling for a red that’s juicy and herbaceous with great acidity to cut through the fat.

Crafted by independent winemaker Michael Corbett, this grenache is from one of Australia’s cooler regions, and is brimming with deep cherry and cassis notes, with dried herbs, a touch of spice and some lovely integrated, delicate tannins.

After trying this wine, you’ll want to pair it with every meal. It’s a truly generous bottle, brimming with character. Yes, it’s an investment but a wise one for the experience. With ripe apple and stone fruit notes (pairing excellently with pork), a citrus creamy lemon curd character, and mouth-watering acidity, this vino is lifted into a medium-bodied bottle of joy.

Another excellent alternative to champagne, at a superb price, this traditional-method crémant is made from 100 per cent chardonnay – a classic pairing with chicken.

Sparkling wine can be an excellent pairing for food, and this crémant offers generous, buttery character with excellent vibrancy – there’s a dash of spice, too. The subtle notes of flaky pastry will pair beautifully with roast chicken – the umami flavours of the chicken skin dancing with the savoury character of the crémant.

Perfect Cellar Domaine Edmond Rentz pinot gris selection de grains nobles, 2013

pinot-gris-indybest
  • Best: Wine to pair with simnel cake
  • ABV: 12%
  • Size: 500ml
  • Grape: Pinot gris
  • Vegan: Unspecified
  • Region: Alsace, France
  • Why we love it
    • Award-winning
    • Perfect dessert wine
  • Take note
    • Expensive
    • Could be too sweet for some

Fans of fruit cake, this one’s for you. This showstopper of a sweet wine is on the pricey side but, believe me, it’s worth it.

In order to be labelled as “sélection de grains nobles”, each grape (infected with noble rot) is harvested manually one by one at the end of October or beginning of November, under state control. After careful winemaking and control, the wine is kept in cellars for two years, during which it undergoes multiple tests and blind tastings. If it meets the quality and standards expected, it will earn the right to the coveted moniker.

With layers of raison and honeyed notes, followed by quince and candied apricot, with a very delicate hint of spice, this is a perfect match for a deliciously dense simnel cake.

Waitrose ruby port

Waitrose-port-indybest
  • Best: Wine to pair with chocolate
  • ABV: 19%
  • Size: 75cl
  • Grape: Field blend
  • Vegan: Unspecified
  • Region: Porto, Portugal
  • Why we love it
    • Perfect for those with a sweet tooth

From the award-winning independent producer Symington Family Estates, this is a great example of a scrumptious ruby port. Plush, smooth, and with rich red and black fruit flavours, this is a classic pairing for rich chocolate cakes. If you’re not a fan of chocolate, get those salty, hard cheeses onto the table instead.

Waitrose grüner veltliner, 2022

Waitrose-Gruner-Veltliner-Austria-indybest
  • Best: Wine for pairing with quiche
  • ABV: 12.5%
  • Size: 75cl
  • Grape: Grüner veltliner
  • Vegan: Yes
  • Region: Niederösterreich, Austria
  • Why we love it
    • Layered with character and flavour
    • Also works as an unaccompanied wine

Waitrose is brimming with fantastic wines at accessible prices right now, and this Austrian grüner is an excellent example. Grüner veltliner is a gastronomic grape variety, meaning it is layered with character, flavour, texture and stands up to a lot of dishes. This grüner, in particular, is vibrant and quaffable, and works brilliantly with food.

With a touch of weight that’ll work beautifully with creamy textures, the bright acidity balances it out, while beautiful herbaceous and spicy aromatics will pair perfectly with a herby, cheesy quiche.

Although this bottle is currently unavailable, it should be back in stock soon.
