Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. While faux fur never really went out of style, it has entered a new stratosphere of popularity this season. With patterns both bold and basic hitting the high street and catwalk alike, consumers are spoilt for choice when looking for something to keep us warm as the days get colder.
And, as even the highest of fashion houses re-evaluate their stance on animal welfare, faux fur has never been as warm and comfy as it is at the moment. Available in a range of styles, lengths and colours, here is our shortlist of winter favourites.
Topshop Faux Fur Coat: £69, Topshop
In an arresting pink shade, this coat is an eye-catching, cosy choice for the colder months. Our tester received more compliments on this coat than any other, with everyone commenting on its softness, which feels much more luxurious than the price tag suggests. Thanks to its short length, it’s easier to style than you would expect from such a statement piece. If pink isn’t your colour, it’s also available in black, blue and mint green, as well as petite and tall options.
Missy Empire Kaydence Brown Teddy Faux Fur Coat: £86, Missy Empire
Those who prefer a more longline style in the winter will love this Missy Empire pick. Covered in teddy-style faux fur, it comes up slightly oversized, which our tester found only adds to its cosiness. We especially loved the colour of this coat: not only do you feel like you’re wrapped up in a blanket, but you look autumnal doing it. As an added bonus, it’s machine washable.
French Connection Annie Faux Shearling Coat: £170, French Connection
It might be one of the pricier entries on our list, but the quality of this coat makes it more than worth it. Softer and thicker than its competitors, it has an oversized, loose fit. While it’s also available in camel, we preferred the “moody grey” shade, which is perfect to throw on over almost any winter outfit. Those who value their pocket space will also appreciate the addition of inner pockets in this coat’s lining.
Next Animal Faux Fur Jacket: £65, Next
Next have knocked it out of the park with their coats this season, but our favourite piece is this leopard print piece. The faux fur is smooth and snug and the fit is tighter than you would expect from a fur coat. We would recommend sizing up or opting for the tall version if you prefer a roomier cut.
Boohoo Two Tone Mongolian Faux Fur Coat: £60, ASOS
In its two-tone, blue and white pattern, this coat is trickier to wear than others on this list, but more than makes up for it in its stylishness. The texture mimics Mongolian fur, which can shed a little on first wear. However, with the right outfit, this is the perfect statement piece, that also feels more luxurious than you would expect thanks to its silky inner lining.
In the Style Kaven Cream Longline Teddy Fur Coat: £34.99, In the Style
This coat is a winner for wearability, coming in a versatile cream shade that goes with anything. The longline cut and teddy fur keep you cosy without feeling bulky, unlike a lot of bigger winter coats. In the Style is notoriously purse-friendly, but this coat is even kinder to your budget as it’s currently reduced down from £69.99.
Nobody’s Child White Snow Leopard Faux Fur Coat: £45.50, Nobody’s Child
Animal prints can feel a little repetitive after a while, which is why we loved Nobody’s Child’s take on the trend. The snow leopard trend is both stylish and winter-appropriate, keeping you cosy without any dreaded faux fur shedding. Our tester especially loved how it dresses up even the simplest outfits, taking your usual jumper and jeans to the next level.
La Sula Pink Pelted Faux Fur Hooded Coat: £59, La Sula
For those who like to make a statement with their winter wardrobe, La Sula has the answer in this pink pelted coat. Unlike a lot of faux fur coats, it comes with a hood (ideal for those winter days where you think it’s going to snow but it just rains instead) and features a popper fastening for ease of wear.
Whistles Faux Fur Biker: £195, Whistles
Two trends in one, this biker jacket combines faux fur with leather to create the ultimate winter warmer. We loved the quality of this jacket, which is unparalleled when it comes to keeping you warm, and found it to be worth the higher price tag. While we loved the grey and black shades, it’s also available in just black for those who prefer a sleeker look.
Glamorous Cheetah Faux Fur Coat: £75, Glamorous
Animal print with a twist, this Glamorous coat intertwines streaks of colour and a bold, cheetah pattern. Of all the prints on this list, our tester loved this one the most thanks to its ability to update a constant winter fashion trend. The faux fur is soft and comfortable, but if we had just one complaint it’s that the mid-length can be a bit awkward on taller wearers.
Bershka Short Fuzzy Coat: £39.19, Bershka
It doesn’t get much bolder than this violet-hued jacket from Spanish brand Bershka, which livens up the most basic outfits. The lapel collar adds an extra layer of warmth around the chest area, eliminating the need for a scarf, and the short cut of the coat makes it more versatile than you would expect from such a bright piece. However, the faux fur isn’t the softest we’ve worn, and can be a bit itchy if you’re not wearing a thick jumper underneath.
Red Herring Light Brown Faux-Fur Leopard Print Jacket: £69, Debenhams
While a lot of faux fur products can weigh you down, this jacket is lightweight without exposing you to the winter cold. The faux fur is soft and high-quality without being too dense and the short, hip-length cut makes it easy to layer over jumpers or dresses. Leopard print is a timeless pattern, making this coat an ideal transitional piece from autumn to winter to spring.
The Verdict: Best faux fur coats & jackets
For the best combination of comfort and style, we love Topshop’s pink faux fur coat. However, if you’re looking for a timeless fashion investment to last you several winters, we’d recommend Whistles’ faux fur biker.
