Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Whether you like to slip into yours the second you get in the door after work, or whether you prefer loafing around in them until just before lunch – one thing is for sure: Christmas is a time for pyjamas. From relaxing and watching films on Christmas Eve to enjoying the first Bucks Fizz of Christmas morning, festive pyjamas are one of the most popular go to gifts for every age.
While his and hers pyjamas have been around a while, the mix and match whole family pyjama set is a new incarnation. From little penguins to Christmas lights and traditional plaid, however you wear them there’s a festive set to suit every family. When buying yours, it’s worth thinking about how you’ll be wearing them; to watch the Strictly Christmas Special or with an apron over the top to make kedgeree on Boxing Day. Dependent on the ages of your tribe, fabric, durability and washability will also play a part in your decision-making.
PJ Pan Morning Side Pjamas: From £42, www.pjpan.co.uk
These are the only sets in our roundup where the fabric is sourced in the UK and manufacture takes place here too, so whatever your feelings on Brexit, PJs don’t get much more British than these. Made with real shell buttons, the cut is generous yet comfortable with a flattering wide leg and pockets. The brushed cotton washes well and while the red hints at Christmas these will look just as good year round. These are the comfiest and most stylish of the bunch we tried, the fabric is beautiful.

Little Blue House Buffalo Plaid Family Pyjamas: From £27, www.littlebluehouse.com
While technically this is a family pyjama review, for little ones with cold tootsies, Little Blue House also do matching slippers for this set. Where the PJs are concerned though, the snugger than normal fit, contrasting cuffs and black and red plaid feel distinctly American and these are one of the comfiest pyjamas to sleep in, like Goldilocks said; "not too hot, not too cold, just right." They wash fantastically too and were a favourite with a seven year old that likes to wriggle a lot in bed.
Liberty Christmas Tana Lawn Cotton Long Pyjama Set: From £195, Liberty
While the pyjamas may be made of cotton, the Tana Lawn cotton is ultra fine and behaves more like silk than cotton with the bonus that it’s machine washable. These are a his and hers set for the more discerning couple that might not have to yet worry about crusted on Weetabix on pyjama tops. Created by the in house design studio to celebrate the festive season, these pyjamas feature a menagerie of festive creatures. So if Santa or elf pyjamas aren’t your bag, these are the perfect choice for the style conscious couple who still want to get into the festive spirit.
Next Monochrome Penguin Pyjamas: From £7, Next
If you’re looking for a cosy set for cold nights, these are the hands down winners. The thick t-shirt material is 100 per cent cotton which means you’ll be as toasty as Emperor penguins in a huddle. The loose fitting bottoms and slightly more fitted top are comfortable and while the kids’ sizes don’t have pockets or drawstrings, the adult sizes do. They wash fantastically and were a hit with both boys and girls.
Spark and Daughters Personalised Polar Bear Family Pyjamas: £45, Not On The High Street
Sparks and Daughters' pyjamas are perfect for the family that put their PJs on when they get home at the end of the day. The adult pyjama top is short sleeved while the children’s size is long sleeved, meaning little arms won’t get cold as the winter nights set in. The children’s pyjamas are made from 100 per cent cotton while the adult sizes are 65 per cent polyester and 35 per cent cotton. Both sets faired well with washing and the simplistic yet stylish Polar bear design and raglan tops mean these are age appropriate for the whole family.
Next Grey Sprout Pyjamas: From £10, Next
From their ‘Just Like Me’ range for kids and grown ups, if your little ones are phobic about eating their sprouts at this time of year, maybe they’ll agree to wear them instead. Made from 100 per cent cotton with raglan t-shirt design, the whole family can go sprout-tastic and there are even 'sprout pout' slippers for everyone starting from £12 too. Although comfy to sleep in, they faded slightly after a few washed but ended up looking better for it. They also raised a smile from everyone who saw them so if you’re after statement PJs, these are for you.
Twenty-Seven Personalised Family Christmas Pyjama Set: £48, Not On The High Street

Sleepytime Family Matching Fleece Cranberry Deer Onesie Footed Pyjamas: From £15, Amazon
If you’re after footed onesie pyjamas that will withstand almost Arctic temperatures, these are the ones. They washed brilliantly and the no slip grippers on the soles meant even little ones are OK in them.
Little Blue House Northern Lights Family Pyjamas: From £17, www.littlebluehouse.com
If you’re a mum that prefers a nightdress to PJs but still wants to fit in with the family, this set is for you. The nightdress and whole range is 100 per cent cotton jersey so has stretch in it but is breathable and machine washes brilliantly. These were the most popular with the kids who loved the whimsical Christmas lights design.
