Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Having reached the top of their trees, Britain's premiere wood sculptors (including Peter Walwin, right) will be displaying their chiselled features at Westonbirt Arboretum in Gloucestershire this weekend.

Armed with chainsaws, hammers and chisels, they will attempt to transform enormous lumps of storm-damaged wood into sculptures, ranging from mythical beasts to soaring birds, and giant moles.

The event was first conceived in 1992, when nine members of the British Woodcarvers Association got together to carve a seven-metre high "totem pole". Such was the appeal of this large-scale sculpture, that the team adopted the name "Sculptree" and planned an annual event.

This year's finished articles will be auctioned on behalf of Tree Aid, a charity whose aim is to protect tree cover and the environment in drought areas of Africa.

If the sound of chainsaws in full swing is too much for those of a nervous disposition, then alternative, more sedate, woody activities are on offer in the shape of woodturning, charcoal burning and boatbuilding.

Sculptree 1996 is at Westonbirt Arboretum, Tetbury, Gloucestershire from Sun 1 Sept to Sun 8 Sept. Info: 01666 880220
