Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The stunning Appalachian Trail is undoubtedly one of Earth’s greatest treks. Based on Bill Bryson’s best-selling travel memoir, the new film A Walk in the Woods highlights the incredible scenery that the trail has to offer. To celebrate the film’s release on 18 September, we’ve teamed up with with small group specialists Grand American Adventures to give one lucky reader the chance to experience it first-hand.

In the film, Robert Redford stars as Bill Bryson (alongside Nick Nolte and Emma Thompson),as he embarks upon an adventure to reconnect with his homeland after returning from two decades in the UK. Along the way he and his old buddy Katz (Nolte) encounter weird and wonderful characters and face hilarious trials and tribulations as they learn that some roads are better left untravelled.

Following in the footsteps of Bill Bryson, the winner will take to the wilderness and explore breath-taking landscapes on a once-in-a-lifetime 10-day ‘Appalachian Trail Walk’ tour with Grand American Adventures, who specialise in small group tours of the Americas. With unrivalled knowledge and experience, they are committed to bringing you the finest adventures available.
