Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Over the coming weeks the latest environmentally friendlier vehicles will be discussed and displayed at the China Green Transport Summit and Exhibition (May 24-25) in Shanghai and the RHS Chelsea Flower show will bring the latest horticultural trends to those with a green thumb. However the major environmental event in the next few weeks is international event World Environment Day on June 5, which raises awareness of climate change and encourages individuals, business and governments to take environmentally positive actions.

RHS Chelsea Flower Show
May 24-28
Royal Hospital, Chelsea
United Kingdom, London
Map

Perhaps one of the world's best known shows of its kind, the RHS Chelsea Flower Show attracts around 157,000 visitors per year - though this number is limited by the capacity of the venue's temporary structure. The show can trace its origins back to the early 1900s and often serves as a showcase for new plants as well as an indicator of major garden trends. This year the show has two new dimensions - the first ever Ladies' Day and an iPhone app. Earlier in the year the latest horticultural trends in the southern hemisphere were revealed at the 16th Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show (March 30 - April 3).

World Environment Day
June 5
Global

World Environment Day, abbreviated to WED, is a global celebration of positive environmental action. The UN-promoted event began in 1972 and has grown to become one of the main ways in which the organization draws attention to environmental issues around the world. The theme for 2011 is Forests: Nature at Your Service - a theme which encompasses the issues of deforestation and the need to protect green spaces. India is the host country for the 2011 event, and organizers expect this year's event to be the most widely celebrated so far. Earlier in the year global environmental campaigns Earth Hour on March 26 and Earth Day on April 22 also aimed to raise awareness of environmental issues around the world.

While not as large as the US-based Yoga Journal conference, the concept is similar and is the largest of its kind in Asia, and will likely expand in coming years as Westernized yoga and major yoga brands continue to expand internationally. The event features master teachers Sharon Gannon, David Life, Rodney Yee, and Jason Nemer. Four-day passes sell for HK$4,999 (€441) or onsite at the event for HK$5,999 (€529).
