Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

This morning Extinction Rebellion will gather outside the Brazilian Embassy to protest the environmental destruction of the Amazon Rainforest and Brazil’s treatment of its indigenous people.

Protestors will gather from 10am to 11.30am outside the embassy in Cockspur Street in central London, before moving on to a second event at Piccadilly Circus exploring how women and FINT people can lead the fight against the climate crisis.

President Jair Bolsonaro, 66, has been accused of presiding over a surge of destruction in the Amazon rainforest, slashing environmental protection programmes, and pushing to open indigenous reservations and other protected lands to agribusiness and mining.

A statement from Extinction Rebellion said: “Indigenous people of Brazil are asking for your support for their fight to defend their lives and lands. Join us for a morning of solidarity and protest, to hear indigenous peoples’ demands and to push the Brazilian government to stop Brazil’s genocide.

“Across Brazil, invasions and destruction of indigenous lands, and attacks against indigenous peoples, are skyrocketing. The Bolsonaro government is attempting to push through legislation that will further its genocidal plans and actions to destroy indigenous peoples and further open up Brazil’s forests to exploitation.

“This is a critical moment in the global struggle for indigenous peoples’ rights, and in the fight against climate catastrophe. The best defenders of the world’s forests are the people who live there.”

From 11.30am protestors will move to Piccadilly Circus for a second event, Courage Calls To Courage: Women and FINT (Female, Intersex, Nonbinary, Trans) Rebellion Action.

The group said: “Women everywhere will rise to the challenge, building bridges as we go. Join us in celebration, solidarity and strength as we raise our voices for the voiceless and on behalf of life itself.”

Around 40 arrests were made on the second day of the Extinction Rebellion (XR) protests in London yesterday, Met Police said.

They follow 52 arrests made yesterday and 10 made on Sunday.
