Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Executives are under enormous pressure to join the cloud services revolution that is sweeping the globe: they understand that this will not only revolutionise their businesses by enabling them to grow, but also save time and money. But, according to Jonathan Allen, an enterprise strategist at Amazon Web Services (AWS), many mistakenly believe the resources required don’t exist in their organisations.

In a compelling 12-step video entitled How to Successfully Scale Your Talent Transformation, Allen insists that businesses have everything they need to deliver results. The keys to success, he argues, are upskilling employees, establishing the right partnerships, and ensuring the correct procedures are in place.

“Focus on developing the skills and then delivering,” he says. “All the help you’ll need is available – and all the answers to your questions have already been written.”

Expert advice

The informative guide is part of the AWS Executive Business Series; a new initiative series which showcases leadership perspectives, inspirational stories and innovative thinking within organisations.

He also suggests that a senior executive should spearhead any cloud transformation as they can reinforce the benefits in terms of cost, security and speed of development. In addition, there should be a virtual leadership team, including heads of infrastructure and legal leads, to provide strategic oversight for the project.

Allen also believes that everyone must understand the goals. What are the business objectives? How will this help? Are the security objectives clear? “Common tenets provide a common frame of reference for everyone to understand the ‘how’ questions that can arise,” he explains.

Key questions answered

Although plenty of questions must be asked during the transformation, it’s also important not to waste hours on this process. Allen suggests keeping a list of key questions to be answered. “The very best way to answer a lot of questions quickly is to arrange an executive briefing centre session with AWS,” he adds.

Creating a holistic cloud engineering team, introducing experts to guide the way, and working backwards from compliance objectives are other important suggestions. Developing a cloud centre of excellence to ensure you have the fight people in place – and that they are managed effectively – will be central to a transformation.

“It’s crucially important to put in place the right training and certification programmes to enable scaling,” Allen says, “and remember that all your assumed constraints are debatable.”
