This year's Festival at Queens will be bolstered by two new sister festivals: The Young at Art, for children and young people; and the Festival Fringe. Not that the central event needs any cultural padding: with the American-flavoured "Big Apple - First Bites" as its main theme, it is hosting a hard core of internationally acclaimed work from artists including Philip Glass, David Byrne, Robert Wilson, John Cale and the Trisha Brown Dance Company. Other highlights are appearances by Gore Vidal, Louis de Bernieres, Van Morrison (above) and Anne Sofie von Otter, plus the world premiere of Stewart Parker's Northern Star, directed by Stephen Rea.

Chicago
The latest snapper to be awarded an exhibition of his work, in what seems to be an ongoing international tribute to Magnum and Life veterans, is Robert Capa, one of this century's great war photographers, who died on assignment in Indochina. It's well worth watching the biographical video in the museum's foyer before viewing the 200 works on show here, in order to put such famous shots as the controversial "The death of a Loyalist militiaman" and the unsettling "Omaha Beach, Normandy: first wave of US Soldiers landing on D-Day" in context.

One of the most significant and comprehensive collections of modern furniture in private hands goes on show at SFMoMA in Sitting on the Edge: Modernist Design from the Collection of Michael and Gabrielle Boyd.
Focusing on how chair design relates to architecture and to the human body, and how furniture makers have combined extreme materials and challenging design with functionality, this thought-provoking exhibition includes works by such luminaries as Gerrit Rietveld, Frank Lloyd Wright, Marcel Breuer, Le Corbusier and Charles Eames.

The Vredenburg Utrecht is one of Holland's principal concert halls, with a programme of more than 400 concerts each season, ranging from classical through jazz to rock.
The annual, one-day Blues Estafette is one of its showcase events, attracting blues enthusiasts from around the world, and its two stages this year will once again resound to sounds from a carefully selected line-up of true "roots" artists.
