Laura Jackson: how I spend a proper night in
The super stylish TV presenter and food aficionado on why comfort food, obscure Mexican music and a rowdy game of cards make her perfect evening…
Not only has she taken the TV scene by storm with her presenting talent, but Laura Jackson is also known for her impeccable style, interiors knowledge and food expertise.
What’s your ideal night in?
Having friends round. I live in a Victorian house in east London with my husband and dog, but we’re both quite sociable, so it’s rarely just us. I like to cook, and for everyone to bring a bottle of wine. We’ll eat, and then end up playing the card game Uno.
Uno’s your party trick?
Sad isn’t it! We also have extreme Uno, which involves a machine dealing for you! It’s a great game and gets quite competitive after a couple of glasses of wine… although mostly you end up laughing.
What are you cooking and drinking?
I like a simple one-pot dish — a curry, stew or fish pie. Something everyone can dip into in the middle of the table. We’ll have a mix of wine and beer, although I love to kick things off with a margarita, as I’m a massive tequila and mezcal fan.
What’s on the stereo?
We love the soundtrack to the film Call Me By Your Name. It’s a beautiful piece of music. My husband is really into old school Northern Soul, Jamaican and Mexican music. Whenever I go to Mexico I’ll get him some obscure CDs.
What’s on the TV?
We’re obsessed with Bodyguard. It’s thrilling, anxiety-inducing and intense. We will sit there with the dog, with the fire on, and binge through a few. Although my all-time favourite is watching Absolutely Fabulous with my best mate. It hasn’t dated at all, and still makes me belly laugh.
Who would be your dream guest at one of your dinner parties?
You would be pushed to beat David Attenborough, wouldn’t you? I’d like to put on Blue Planet and get him to talk me through the whole thing with the sound down. At the end, we’d clap.
Finally, what’s your favourite Propercorn flavour?
I love salty and my husband loves sweet, so we usually do a half and half mix, which is perfect.
