Thelma and Louise’s recent arrival on Netflix has got us thinking about TV and film’s greatest double acts. From comic duos with impeccable on-screen chemistry to charismatic anti-heroines taking on the world, the power of the twosome on the big and small screen alike is undeniable. Here, we revisit some of the very best…

Eddy and Patsy, Absolutely Fabulous

Despite first airing in 1992, Absolutely Fabulous’ knack for ridiculing the upper-class self-absorption of the fashion industry with disarming hilarity remains quotable today. And that’s thanks to Eddy (Jennifer Saunders) and Patsy (Joanna Lumley), the co-dependent and dysfunctional friends whose debauched antics take them from a rubbish barge on the Thames to a Marilyn Manson concert in full goth regalia. That’s fashion, darling!

Shaun and Ed, Shaun Of The Dead

At the heart of the Bafta-nominated horror-comedy Shaun Of The Dead is the titular character’s relationship with his best friend, Ed – played by longtime collaborators Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Most of the brilliant one-liners come from their friendship: the private jokes, shared dislikes and childishness in the face of actual apocalypse has everybody rooting for the pair, despite their incompetence.

It’s not just Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson’s ability to find absurd humour in the more mundane aspects of navigating life in your twenties that makes Broad City so addictive. The show, which first gained cult acclaim as a web series, captures female friendship in a way that television so rarely does. Refreshingly honest and unconcerned with romantic interest, the hilarious pair are a pleasure to watch.

Clarence and Alabama, True Romance

In Tarantino’s world of highly-stylised violent crime, the love story that stands out is the ride-or-die romance of Clarence (Christian Slater) and Alabama Worley (Patricia Arquette). Thrown into a high stakes cat-and-mouse chase by accident (bedecked in a wardrobe of kitschy Americana, of course), the duo’s frenetic tale of star-crossed love is one of cinema’s most iconic.

And finally, the ultimate twosome. No list of double acts can be complete without a mention of Thelma (Geena Davis) and Louise (Susan Sarandon). Not only has the iconic Ridley Scott road movie left behind a feminist legacy thanks to its empowering tale of female friendship, but two female leads and a female screenwriter brought a fresh perspective to the silver screen that still feels relevant today. Double trouble.
