Spiderman, Superman, Batman: when someone says superhero, chances are you’ll probably think of a man.

We’re used to seeing the people saving lives and stopping evil geniuses from taking over the world depicted as men, even though the comics that provide the source material for these films and TV shows have no shortage of women with superpowers. Luckily broadcasters and movie execs are catching up, and there are more and more superhero shows and films with female leads.

Here are some of the best to stream right now...

If you like your superheroes sarcastic then Jessica Jones is the show for you. While her name might sound pretty ordinary, her powers are anything but. It’s part superhero show, part detective series making it perfect for those who aren’t so keen on the usual saving-the-world shtick.

While I personally wish Superman’s female equal (and cousin) was called Superwoman, I’m willing to put it to one side for Sky One’s epic take on the story of another Krypton native sent to Earth. The show, which has been renewed for a fourth season launching on 18 October, is all about Supergirl “realising her strength and potential”. Something us mere mortal strong women can certainly get on board with.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

In the superhero spy agency that is S.H.I.E.L.D reside some impressively stereotype-busting female characters. There’s weapons expert Melinda May, Daisy Johnson who can create earthquakes with her mind, science whizz and authority on all human and alien life forms Jemma Simmons, and the stick twirling Bobbi Morse.

Sending out the message that, from superheroes and scientists to martial arts experts, women can be whatever they want to be.

While Elektra fans sadly won’t be seeing the trained assassin in her own Netflix spin-off anytime soon, she and her ninja skills will be popping up in The Defenders regularly. But if that isn’t enough ferocious martial arts action for you, catch Jennifer Garner as the unlikely superhero in 2005 movie Elektra.

Wonder Woman

One of the most-hyped blockbuster releases of 2017, Wonder Woman silenced any premature (and mostly) sexist criticism by wowing audiences and critics alike. Fast, fiery and feminist through and through, relive it in all its glory and unleash your inner Wonder Woman.
