From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Ben Haenow was crowned winner of The X Factor 2014 last night and now, official voting figures have shown that the Croydon lad had been the public’s favourite for the past seven weeks.

Ben, a 29-year-old former truck driver from Croydon, scored more than half of the public vote in the final with 57.2 per cent.

Contrary to being the bookies’ favourites, Fleur East secured 34.3 per cent while Italian singer Andrea Faustini polled 8.5 per cent.

Fleur, whose semi-final performance of Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk” proved so popular that the producer released it five weeks early, was not the most popular contestant in any of the votes.

Andrea, who left on Saturday night after coming third, was the favourite in the first three shows.

This year’s series attracted 40 million votes from viewers – the highest number of any series in X Factor history.

The rise in votes may be down to a new free app that enables fans to vote from their smartphones and tablets.

Ben has now released his winner’s single, a cover of “Something I Need” by OneRepublic in a bid to take the Christmas number one.

He has competition from “Uptown Funk” however, which is currently number one in the UK singles chart.
