Louis Walsh's Luke Friend was the first contestant through to next week, before Nicholas MacDonald and favourite Sam Bailey joined him in the clear.
Despite forgetting her words on last night's show while performing James Arthur's "Impossible", Tamera Foster was given the green light to audible boos from the audience, leaving Hannah and Rough Copy in the bottom two after receiving the fewest public votes.
Hannah, 17, shone as she fought to remain in the competition while rivals Rough Copy danced along to her ballsy performance of Etta James' "I'd Rather Go Blind".
Then the urban trio, Gary's only remaining act, strived to stamp their own mark on a cover of Oasis' "Stop Crying Your Heart Out".
"I'm so disappointed and furious with the British public right now that they have my girl in the bottom two for the third time," said Hannah's mentor Nicole Scherzinger, before sending home Rough Copy.
As expected, Gary voted to save his own act and sent home Hannah. Sharon echoed Nicole by calling the viewers' decision a "travesty" but called Hannah's name as the person to leave the show.
Louis Walsh credited an "amazing sing-off" between two acts who "remembered all their words", leaving Nicole looking unimpressed at his blatant reference to Tamera's earlier failings and even more upset when he chose to save Rough Copy.
"I feel so blessed to be here and I thank God for everything that I have," Greggs bakery worker Hannah said before leaving.
Earlier in the show, recently-disbanded X Factor contestants JLS performed their first single "Everybody In Love" and female vocal legend Mary J Blige duetted with "Wild" pop star Jesse J for a classy, confident version of "Do You Hear What I Hear?".
Introduced as "the fans' band" by host Dermot O'Leary, One Direction emerged on-stage to a barrage of high-pitched screams. The five-piece boyband should really walk around with 'danger: ears will shatter" warnings tattooed on their foreheads as the shrieks during "Story Of My Life" were loud enough to do just that.
Next week the contestants will take on two songs each, one of which will be chosen by viewers.
Rebecca Ferguson and James Arthur will be performing on the show, providing the latter has recovered after being diagnosed with 'acute exhaustion' earlier this week.
