From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Whoopi Goldberg had strong words for President Donald Trump on Monday morning's episode of The View (23 November).
Calling out Trump's refusal to concede the 2020 presidential election, The View moderator accused the sitting President of staging "a coup".
“I mean, it's crazy. Reporter Carl Bernstein also released the names of 21 Republican senators who've privately voiced their contempt for [Trump]. I mean, what is it going to take to get people going? We can all just get together and sing 'the party's over',” she said.
“There’s so much disinformation coming out about these crazy court cases he keeps doing and what’s going on in Michigan right now," Goldberg continued, speaking to host Sunny Hostin.
"It feels like they’re attempting a coup, to me, Sunny. I know everyone doesn’t want to hear that, but this is what dictators do when they try to say, ‘This election isn’t real. This didn’t happen. I’m going to change it.'”
"Either we fix it now, or he’s going to walk away with it. Because his lies are many, and they go farther and farther and farther. And it doesn’t matter what we seem to say here because the lies seem to quadruple. As soon as we speak them, they have a lie to block it.”
"The appearance of impropriety that is happening in the Republican party is disgraceful," Hostin weighed in. “And Carl Bernstein saying that 22 people are speaking to him 'privately...' Privately means nothing. Because every person is watching this, not only in this country but around the world."
