From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Whoopi Goldberg's stone-faced expression is going viral after a back and forth with The View co-host Meghan McCain.

“It’s 2021 and we are all Whoopi,” tweeted LA-based comedian Justin Martindale, along with a brief clip of McCain speaking on The View, followed by Goldberg’s reaction.

“The American experiment is the way to go, and if we have two American women, Meghan Markle and Oprah Winfrey, who are single-handedly finishing what George Washington and our revolutionary counterparts did, I’m all for it,” the McCain could be seen saying into the camera.

"OK," a confused-looking Goldberg said after a long pause.

Other viewers wrote on Twitter responding to the actor's expression.

“I am WHEEZING at this Whoopi Goldberg reaction to Meghan McCain,” wrote @tommyxtopher.

“Whoopi Goldberg is an entire mood and I am here for it,” wrote @arrpeebee.

“Dear @WhoopiGoldberg, Can I use this expression whenever someone goes on and on and on about how they’re not racist, sexist, ageist, anti-Semitic, homophobic, transphobic, and/or any other -ist or phobic?,” wrote @kenolin1.

On Monday, McCain was also criticised for comparing her own experiences to the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, who spoke to Oprah Winfrey in a widely viewed two-hour special on Sunday (7 March).

“In no way am I comparing any of my life experiences to Meghan Markle … but, I do know what it’s like to be on a TV show or a political campaign where people are leaking stories about you with the sole intention to make you look bad, and let me tell you, it would do a number on your mental health like you wouldn’t believe. It will make you feel isolated. It will make you feel paranoid,” McCain said.

“The only thing they have in common is their name … If the staff and producers liked you, those stories wouldn't be getting out,” a source told PageSix. “You don't see them getting out about anyone else. No one's running around talking about Whoopi. It's shocking how [McCain] behaves. If she doesn't want things leaked, don't do things to get leaked.”
