Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

9pm, BBC2
Back in the 1850s, being served by a woman in a shop would have scandalised – until a surplus of young women in the population caused Victorian do-gooders to search around for suitable employment.
The social historian Pamela Cox, who made that eye-opening BBC2 series of domestic servants, The True Story of Life Below Stairs, charts the evolution of the “shopgirl”.
Alison Steadman’s Shetland
9pm, ITV
This gentle documentary is probably more enthralling if you’re a dedicated birdwatcher like Alison Steadman – “a city girl and a back-garden twitcher” – who is also a patron of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. She travels from Lerwick to Unst in search of puffins and black guillemots.
The Auction House
9pm, Channel 4
The morning after the weekly auction at Lots Road, Chelsea, and it’s the busiest day of the week as new items begin to arrive.
Europe’s Immigration Disaster
11pm, Channel 4
How last October a boat carrying more than 500 migrants from North Africa capsized off the coast of the Italian island of Lampedusa, killing 360 people, many of them women and children.
And if you just can't help yourself
Fifa World Cup Live: Costa Rica vs England
4pm, ITV
England’s final group match will sadly be more of interest in Costa Rica, Italy and Uruguay than on these shores. Time for Roy to blood some young’uns perhaps. Kick-off is at 5pm.
