From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Dancing on Ice has returned to screens for its 13th season tonight (17 January).

To the delight of fans, the ITV series – hosted by Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby – is finally back with a cast of 12 new celebrities and their skating partners battling it out to be crowned this year’s winners.

One familiar face to return is professional ice dancer Vanessa Bauer.

This year, Bauer is teamed up with Emmerdale actor Joe-Warren Plant but fans of the series will recognise the talented skater from previous seasons.

As well as being a professional ice skater, Bauer is also an acrobat and dancer.

The 24-year-old grew up in Berlin, Germany, and spent much of her early career performing on the luxury cruise liner HMS Harmony of the Seas.

Bauer moved to London and first joined the cast of Dancing on Ice in January 2018. The skater was paired up with former X Factor star Jake Quickenden, and the duo went on to win the series.

Following her success, Bauer returned to the show in 2019 as the professional partner to Love Island’s Wes Nelson. The pair made it all the way to the season finale but were eventually bested by reality TV star James Jordan and skater Alexandra Schauman.

Bauer again came in second place last year, when she was partnered up with Diversity star Perri Kiely. The duo went head-to-head with EastEnders actor Joe Swash and professional skater Alex Murphy in a tense season finale.

Dancing on Ice airs on Sunday nights at 7:00pm on ITV.
