At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Hillary Clinton was greeted with chants of “lock him up!” when she was asked by Stephen Colbert about efforts to impeach Donald Trump.
Speaking to Clinton and her daughter Chelsea on his US talk show, Colbert asked: “We learnt about the Trump-Ukraine call [and] the private server. Is it time to, dare I say, ‘lock him up?’”
The phrase, a spin on a refrain used repeatedly by Trump and his supporters during the 2016 election about Clinton herself, was met with cheers from the audience.
“We have started an impeachment inquiry, which will look at the evidence, and I think that’s exactly what should be done,” Clinton replied.
She continued, “I believe strongly that this particular incident has had such a huge impact because we’ve known for a long time that he was a corrupt businessman who cheated people.
“But to see him in the office of the president, putting his own personal and political interests ahead of the national security of our country, just pierced through whatever confusion or denial people had.”
The audience clapped and cheered in response.
Trump is currently being investigated over a phone call to Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky in which it is said he appeared to attempt to leverage military aid for personal political gain.
Last night, Trump likened the investigation to a “coup”, and one designed to strip Americans of their freedoms.
