Trevor Noah put on his best Margot Robbie impersonation to explain the GameStop saga.

Throughout January, a group of amateur investors from the r/wallstreetbets Reddit group have bought a large amount of shares in video-game retailer GameStop, causing a 700 per cent surge in the company’s value.

As a result, the share price has soared from around $20 (£14.65) at the beginning of the month to nearly $350 (£256) a share at close of trading on Wednesday (27 January), resulting in huge profits for the buyers and devastating losses for a number of hedge funds.

With the story leaving many people scratching their heads, they turned to 2015 financial drama The Big Short in hope of understanding what was going on, in particular referencing a scene in which Robbie explains financial terms while sipping champagne in a bubble bath.

In a clip shared on The Daily Show Twitter on Thursday (28 January), comedian Noah answered their calls as he parodied the scene as a means of explaining the saga. You can watch the full explainer below.

In the clip, Noah’s head is edited onto the clip of Robbie in the bath, with the South African comedian donning his best Australian accent as he attempts to explain what happened at GameStop in the simplest possible terms.

“Basically, there’s a group of people on Reddit who don’t use the stock market to bet, they use it to gamble,” Noah-as-Robbie explains. “And yeah, that’s what a lot of serious investors do too, but these guys on Reddit are more honest about it and they love to troll the people who aren’t.”

The video was widely praised online by viewers who said the scene wasn’t just “hilarious”, but “actually a helpful explainer”.

“This is the type of content I stay on Twitter [for],” one commenter wrote.

“Got it, finally,” another tweet read, while one Twitter user said: “Serious journalism! Thank you @trevornoah.”

“This is the best explanation I’ve seen. I’m so glad I’m kinda getting what they’re saying,” another commenter wrote.
