From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. This Morning viewers have branded Alison Hammond a “national treasure” after she took over the main presenting job on Friday (13 August).
The TV personality, who often appears on ITV’s daytime show as a roving correspondent, was joined by Rochelle Humes as she covered the show while Eamonn and Ruth Holmes were off. Starting the programme with a grand entrance complete with music and flashing lights, Hammond quickly got into the swing of things, with Humes saying: “Look at us, two ladies on the telly… Hear hear for the women.”
As the pair moved on with the show, viewers on social media praised Hammond for her “hilarious” and “brilliant” presenting style and called for Humes and Hammond to be given their own series.
Many suggested that Hammond was the necessary dose of fun they’d been looking for during the coronavirus pandemic, with one writing. “Sorry but can @AlisonHammond be on #ThisMorning every day?! She is what we need during these troubling times."
Another agreed, adding that Hammond was a “breath of fresh air”.
“Loving @AlisonHammond and @RochelleHumes are doing an amazing job. I hope we get to see them hosting together more,” one Twitter user wrote.
“Amazing to see @RochelleHumes and @AlisonHammond presenting #ThisMorning together,” another commented. “What a great, and inspirational pairing, AND it’s nice to be able to hear what the guests are saying instead of having Eamonn and Ruth interrupting all the time.”
A number of viewers particularly praised This Morning for not only having two black women present, but using the opportunity to address different topics relevant to their experiences.
“I’m just realising how many beauty and hair segments I’ve watched that just don’t apply to me… finally something for me,” one viewer wrote. “This is equality! @RochelleHumes @AlisonHammond we salute you! #blacklivesmatter.”
“Two black women presenting #thismorning today,” another commented. “Alison Hammond and Rochelle Humes are bloody brilliant, it shouldn’t have taken this long for ITV to have diversity in its presenters.”
