Viewers have reacted angrily to Channel 4's new documentary The World's Most Expensive Food, with many branding it “vulgar” and “sickening”.

The mind-boggling show, which aired last night at 8pm, followed London's most exclusive food suppliers as they battle to source the finest food and drink for cash-splashing foreign billionaires.

From the man who happily parts with £5,000 for a single shot of vintage cognac to £24,000 caviar, it's easy to see why people would be alarmed by these dizzy heights of indulgence.

Most shocking was the £325 paid for a cup of the world's priciest Kopi Luwak coffee, made from cherries eaten and excreted by the Asian Palm Civet (a cat-like animal).

“The rich are getting too rich while millions starve,” one viewer wrote on Twitter, while another claimed those shown on the programme were “unhinged, detached from humanity and the real world”.

More humourously, it was also pointed out that there was an advert for discount supermarket Lidl in the break, just to rub it home that most of us could never afford anything like the produce being discussed.
