The Walking Dead has released the first look at its new spin-off show that will begin next year – and it features a surprise connection to Andrew Lincoln's character, Rick Grimes.

Following the broadcast of the show’s tenth mid-season finale, US network AMC unveiled the teaser alongside its title: The Walking Dead: World Beyond.

This show will be the second spin-off Walking Dead series following Fear the Walking Dead, which will return in 2020 for a sixth season.

It is the latest addition to the Walking Dead franchise, which is being overseen by Scott Gimple. It was revealed earlier this year that a trilogy of films based on Andrew Lincoln’s character Rick Grimes is currently in production, and will be shown in cinemas upon its release.

The series will focus on a younger set of characters, who were raised in the zombie apocalypse. Aliyah Royale, Annet Mahendru, Nicolas Cantu and Hal Cumpston will play the main roles.

It'll feature CRM, the mysterious group that flew Grimes away in a helicopter in Lincoln's final episode last season.

Among the adult cast is Julia Ormond, who will star in the new show as Elizabeth – a “charismatic leader of a large, sophisticated and formidable force” – and Natalie Gold, who was last seen playing Kendall Roy’s wife Rava in the HBO series Succession.

The latest episode of The Walking Dead featured a scene that may have hinted how the show will end.

The Walking Dead: World Beyond is coming to Prime Video in Spring 2020.
