The Masked Singer fans think that Sheridan Smith might not be behind Sausage’s costume after all.

Since week one of the wacky ITV competition, the actor’s name has circulated in regards to Sausage’s identity, with viewers believing that the contestant’s impressive vocal ability is akin to musical theatre star Smith’s.

However, that theory was rocked on Sunday (7 February) night, following Smith’s appearance on Musicals: The Greatest Show.

During the BBC TV special, the actor joined forces with Britain’s Got Talent Amanda Holden to perform “I Know Him So Well” from the musical Chess, as well as “Don't Rain on My Parade” from Funny Girl.

But while the performance was suitably emotional, it left many viewers questioning whether Smith was actually Sausage after all, after the voices didn’t seem to match up.

“My mum sees the host and goes “who’s she?” after spending literally weeks insisting the sausage on The Masked Singer is Sheridan Smith,” one viewer tweeted.

“I don’t know who needs to hear this but if you still think Sausage is Sheridan Smith you are wrong,” another tweet read.

“So now I’m thinking my Sheridan Smith prediction as Sausage on #TheMaskedSingerUK is wrong,” one commenter wrote. “I was so convinced… Back to the drawing board.”

Sausage is one of the three contestants heading into next Saturday’s (13 February) final of The Masked Singer, after performing “Rise Up” by Andra Day and “Good as Hell” by Lizzo during this week’s show. She’ll be competing alongside Badger and Robin.

While Smith has led the bookies’ odds to be unmasked as Sausage since week one, she slipped down the ranks this weekend. Joss Stone is now in pole position to be named as Sausage, with odds of 5/6. Smith is in second at 2/1 and Stacey Solomon in third at 4/1.

The Masked Singer continues Saturday at 7pm on ITV.
