Despite this, however, low viewing ratings cast its future in doubt placing Damon Lindelof's mystery series on the cusp of cancellation.
Fortunately, HBO renewed The Leftovers for a third and final season in December - and while plot details remain sparse (this is the same guy who co-created Lost, remember), some key details on location and casting have been revealed.
The series focuses on the aftermath of a fictional event which sees 2% of the world’s population disappear. Initially set in Mapleton, New York, Lindelof rejigged the formula for season two, relocating the characters to Jarden - a Texan town renamed 'Miracle' due to being the only town unaffected by the event.
Much in the same way, the show's swansong will see the characters relocate to Australia.
TVLine has reported which exact characters we can expect to see Down Under: Justin Theroux will reprise his role as Kevin Garvey while on-screen siblings Christopher Eccleston and Carrie Coon will return as Reverend Matt Jamison and Nora Durst.
They will join the previously announced Liv Tyler who revealed she'll be returning as Meg Abbott.
Scott Glenn, Amy Brenneman, Margaret Qualley and Chris Zylka are all down to star alongside Regina King and Kevin Carroll who played the Murphys in the show's second season.
Ann Dowd - who played Guilty Remnant founder Patti Levin - is not expected to return - although this being one of the most unpredictable shows on television, who knows?
The Leftovers is expected to air on Sky Atlantic this autumn.
