From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

News of The Great British Bake Off moving to Channel 4 from the BBC has caused quite a stir among viewers, many disappointed the show could lose its four presenters and be riddled with advert breaks.

However, it’s not just viewers reacting to the series changing channel; numerous ex-contestants have spoken about the change on Twitter, including last year’s Flora Shedden and Tamal Ray (but not Nadiya Hussain just yet).

“Really sad to hear that the BBC has lost rights to Bake Off,” Shedden wrote. “Its success is down to format and aesthetic - commercialising will ruin that.”

Series four’s Richard Burr added: “Oh look, we've made something beautiful that loads of people love. Lets render it down and hawk off the bits!”

As yet, the core on-screen team - Mary Berry, Paul Hollywood, Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc - have yet to comment since the news broke. Perkins did, however, retweet a BBC statement.

The current series of Bake Off airs every Wednesday on BBC One.
