From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Queen Elizabeth was reportedly left “sad and annoyed” by one particular episode of Netflix's hit series The Crown.

The offending scene appears in the second season's ninth episode, titled "Paterfamilias", in which the Queen is shown arguing with Prince Philip about which school to send Prince Charles to.

They eventually settle on Philip's old education centre Gordonstoun School, despite the Queen's preference of Eton.

Later in the episode, viewers see Charles subjected to tough school life, including running in the bitter cold, receiving no sympathy from his father.

“The Queen realises that many who watch The Crown take it as an accurate portrayal of the Royal Family and she cannot change that,” a source told the Express. “But I can convey that she was upset by the way Prince Philip is depicted as being a father insensitive to his son’s well-being.

“She was particularly annoyed at a scene in which Philip has no sympathy for a plainly upset Charles while he is flying him home from Scotland. That simply did not happen.”

For the most part, however, the sovereign is said to be a fan of the show after reportedly deciding to so her son and daughter-in-law, the Earl and Countess of Wessex, encouraged her to do so.

Claire Foy recently won an Emmy for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth. Olivia Colman replaces her as the lead for the show's forthcoming third season which has also recast other roles to reflect the changing of time. Helena Bonham Carter, Tobias Menzies and Josh O'Connor will appear in a series set to introduce Diana by the finale.
