From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Lord Alan Sugar and his “You’re fired!” index finger were busy again tonight with two more candidates leaving the competition.

Swimming instructor Lindsay Booth and fashion retailer Nurun Ahmed were both eliminated from the business contest after the teams were tasked with marketing scented candles.

Booth, 29, who owns her own swimming academy, admitted she was out of her depth, telling Lord Alan she was “disappointed” in herself.

“I know I haven’t been the person I thought I was going to be when I came here. If anything, I’ve learnt I’m probably best at sticking to what I know best and that’s swimming,” she said.

Lord Alan fired her before the final boardroom showdown and made light of Booth’s predicament. “As a swimming instructor, I can tell you, you’re drowning at the moment. You really are. This place is full of sharks,” he said.

Booth later confessed that she would have become the first candidate to quit the show if Lord Alan hadn’t fired her. "I think he knew that and he got in there first,” she said.

Meanwhile, Ahmed was also fired from the show after failing to prove her sales ability on the candles task.

Despite having helmed the winning team in the second episode Ahmed was next in line for Lord Alan’s caustic remarks. He called her past success “luck” and said she doesn’t have the project manager’s acumen.

The 36-year-old from Peterborough said the experience had toughened her up but she still believed she could be nice and succeed in business.

Ahmed said: "I've learned to be a little bit more shrewd, but I'm very considerate and I have a soft approach, and that's something I'll never change."
