Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Strictly Come Dancing always knows how to put on a show at Halloween and tonight was no exception.

All the boxes were ticked: Graeme’s routine to Michael Jackson’s "Thriller", creepy contact lenses for the judges, zombie-inspired choreography around some polystyrene gravestones… and a pencil case full of eyeliner (Claudia finally had some company).

Here's what you might have missed…

Top 10s for Faye and Ashley

Last week belonged to Danny, as he nabbed the first 10 of the series, but it was all about the pop stars tonight, as their previous dance experience shone through and they both scored 39 out of a possible 40.

As much as everyone loves Faye, you might feel there’s not much difference between her music video routines and a theatrical number. Saying that, the choreography was extremely demanding and she sizzled.

Likewise, Ashley nailed the Charleston. In both routines it was difficult to spot who was the celeb and who was the pro.

Time’s up for Seann?

Surely he can’t survive another week? Despite the appeal of a man in Lederhosen, his Viennese Waltz wasn’t up to scratch, and the idea of him playing toymaker opposite Katya’s porcelain doll was just a bit weird.

The finished bottom of the judges’ leaderboard leaving them vulnerable to the dance-off. Only the public can save them and it’s difficult to imagine people reaching for their phones after recent events.

Tango meets TARDIS

She may have only finished third on the leaderboard, but Stacey Dooley is definitely the golden girl of the ballroom at the moment, she can do no wrong as far as the judges are concerned. Tonight she emulated another BBC sensation, Jodie Whittaker, giving us a Doctor Who themed tango in braces, while Kevin dressed up as a Cyberman. Only on Strictly. Everyone lapped it up and someone in a BBC boardroom smiled a very smug smile.

Brrrrrruuno’s back!

Oh how we missed him! The banter between him and Craig reached an all-time high tonight, with Bruno dismissing his colleague as an evil queen and Craig quipping that Mr Tonioli should have stayed away another week. If someone doesn’t commission a spin-off (‘Keeping up with Craig and Bruno’?) I want a refund on my licence fee. Side note: Nicole Scherzinger also turned up in the front row to support Ashley. Last thing we heard they were at loggerheads? Maybe it’s more convenient to be friends now.

Raiding the fancy dress box

Bruno lead a standing ovation for the costume and make up teams tonight, who excelled as always. Stand out looks included Kate and Aljaz as the ice king and queen, with sequined eyebrows and Dr Ranj as a furry-footed monster.

The judges poured scorn over both Kate’s rumba and Ranj’s jive, so it’s a good job they looked amazing. Pasha dressed as a troll with a beer belly was a masterclass in costume design, but definitely not his best look.
