Stranger Things fans believe two major character deaths could have been avoided - if only two specific characters had behaved differently.
In the season three finale, as the main cast are rushing to stop a terrible series of events, Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) is seen calling his girlfriend Suzie (Gabriella Pizzolo) to ask her to remind him of the specific numbers in Planck’s constant, a key notion in quantum physics.
Dustin needs the constant to open a safe containing two keys that can be used to close the gate between Hawkins, Indiana and the Upside Down.
Although the situation is woefully urgent, Suzie – annoyed at Dustin for not contacting her for a week and returning only to ask her for a favour – refuses to give Dustin the information until he sings a song with her.
The two then duet on “The NeverEnding Story”, the 1984 song titled after the film of the same name.
While the sequence makes for a sweet moment, some fans have pointed out that it considerably delays the group’s efforts to close the Upside Down, and have claimed that Suzie and Dustin are thus responsible for the deaths of Billy and Jim Hopper, who both perish not long afterward.
“The scene in Stranger Things three where Dustin and Suzie sing is cute or whatever, but if they wouldn’t have Billy and Hopper would probably still be alive,” one person tweeted.
“IF SUZIE AND DUSTIN DIDN’T SING THAT SILLY DAMN SONG HOPPER AND BILLY MIGHT BOTH STILL BE ALIVE?????” someone else wrote.
Another person, however, remained enthralled by Suzie and Dustin’s duet, despite the two character deaths.
