According to TVLine, the hit series will begin production in January 2020, with shooting expected to last until August, which rules out a spring or summer debut.
In recent seasons, the fantasy show – starring Finn Wolfhard and Millie Bobby Brown – has been set in the same season it was released in. Many theories suggested the new season would be set and released in April, with some going further to suggest that episodes could coincide with the 1986 Chernobyl disaster.
Considering the filming dates, though, this now seems unlikely.
While it seems Netflix could be planning on making fans wait until 2021 for new episodes, a recent tweet from creators Matt and Ross Duffer have teased a potential premiere date of 16 November – the very day the first ever episode was set on.
They wrote alongside the date: “Anyway I think you’ll – sorry I couldn’t get it done – but you mean so – and it’s been – hope this is – last until – love.”
Fans have been guessing what the missing words could be, with some believing the date’s placement hints that time travel will play a part in the new season.
While it’s unclear whether David Harbour will be returning to the show following his possible demise in the season three finale, it seems certain that an original character will be making a comeback.
