From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Stephen Furst — best known for playing Vir Cotto in Babylon 5 and Kent "Flounder" Dorfman in Animal House — has died aged 63 following complications with diabetes.

Furst’s sons, Nathan and Griffith, confirmed the news on Facebook, writing: “Steve has a long list of earthly accomplishments. He was known to the world as a brilliant and prolific actor and filmmaker, but to his family and many dear friends he was also a beloved husband, father and kind friend whose memory will always be a blessing.

“To truly honour him, do not cry for the loss of Stephen Furst. But rather, enjoy memories of all the times he made you snicker, laugh, or even snort to your own embarrassment. He intensely believed that laugher is the best therapy, and he would want us to practice that now.

“If you knew him personally, remember his gift for lighting up a room. And no matter who you are, when you think of Steve, instead of being sad, celebrate his life by watching one of his movies or use one of his bits to make someone else laugh — really, really hard.”

Furst came to America’s attention after playing “Flounder" in National Lampoon's Animal House and spin-off series Delta House.

Years later, Furst landed the role of Dr. Elliot Axelrod in television series St. Elsewhere, having the role for five years. Between 1994 and 1998, he played Vir Cotto in Babylon 5.

Co-stars and celebrities have since paid tribute to the actor and comedian online.
