He might be the man of the moment as far as Star Wars 7 is concerned, but JJ Abrams' Fox series Almost Human has been axed.

The US director's sci-fi drama will not return for a second season despite averaging around 5.5 million viewers over 13 episodes last year, Deadline reports.

Fox has a crammed schedule, having renewed several past series and given the green light to newcomers Backstrom, Hieroglyph and Broadchurch adaptation Gracepoint.

Karl Urban and Michael Ealy starred in Almost Human, which featured robotic cops employed by law enforcement agencies in an effort to combat rapidly escalating crime rates in Los Angeles, 2048.

Ealy's character Dorian is a defunct model who feels more like a human. He is partnered with Urban’s human, anti-android John Kennex and the pair strike up an unexpected friendship.

Minka Kelly, Michael Irby, Lili Taylor and Mackenzie Crook also appeared in Almost Human, which will be coming to UK screens later in 2014.

Fans will be disappointed by the news that there will be no more Dorian-Kennex cases, but some might be appeased with the official revelation of the Star Wars 7 cast yesterday.

Abrams' seventh instalment will include performances from the original trio of Harrison Ford, Carrie Miller and Mark Hamill, plus new arrivals John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac and more.
