CBS has confirmed plans to expand the television franchise following the success of Star Trek: Discovery under the guidance of its co-creator, Alex Kurtzman.
This would see a multitude of new TV series set within the Trek universe, one of which The Hollywood Reporter claims will be focused on the legendary commanding officer.
THR states that Kurtzman and Akiva Goldsman are both attached to the reboot but CBS TV Studios have declined to confirm the Stewart-led project.
Despite this, Stewart's own words have fuelled speculation of his return having formerly stated he “may have cause” to watch Discovery “very soon.” Further reports to be taken with a pinch of salt, claim that Stewart has a “verbal agreement” to appear in a Picard series.
The actor's last appearance as the character arrived in box office bomb Star Trek: Nemesis. He first played Picard in TV series Star Trek: The Next Generation which ran for seven seasons between 1987-93.
Star Trek: Discovery - fronted by Sonequa Martin-Green - will return for a second season in 2019.
