Winter, who created the celebrated period drama Boardwalk Empire and wrote the screenplay for The Wolf of Wall Street, left the project due to creative differences, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
He was set to serve as a writer and showrunner. A search is now being conducted to fill the latter role.
The HBO Max series will serve as a spinoff to Matt Reeve’s The Batman, the DC Comics film currently in production with Robert Pattinson in the title role. Zoë Kravitz has been cast in the movie as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, while Jeffrey Wright will star as James Gordon and Paul Dano will portray Edward Nashton/Riddler.
Casting decisions have yet to be announced for the TV show. It is unclear if Pattinson, Wright, and other cast members will reprise their respective roles.
Production on The Batman has been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The film is current scheduled for release in March 2022.
Winter wrote or co-wrote 25 episodes of The Sopranos – the most after series creator David Chase. He also served as an executive producer and won four Emmys for his work on the show.
Winter also received an Oscar nomination in the Best Adapted Screenplay category for his writing on The Wolf of Wall Street.
