Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

An Irish TV presenter has been praised after continuing her live weather report despite being battered by rain and gales from Storm Desmond.

Teresa Mannion, from Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ), attracted widespread admiration among social media users with her report from Salthill, Galway.

A video posted by RTÉ News shows Ms Mannion soaked to the skin and bracing herself against the wind, while shouting into her microphone.

She explains how “treacherous” conditions are in the north-west of Ireland and pleads with the public not to make “unnecessary journeys”.

“Don’t take risks on treacherous roads,” she continues. “And don’t swim in the sea. Incredibly, people have been spotted in the water here in Blackrock and Salthill, both today and yesterday.”

According to RTE, Ms Mannion made it back to the station safely.

The video has been shared thousands of times on Twitter, with some calling for RTE to give Ms Mannion a raise or a medal.

An electronic dance music remix of her report was also posted on YouTube.

It comes after Storm Desmond caused chaotic scenes across the UK, leaving thousands of homes without electricity in north Wales, Northern Ireland and North Yorkshire.
