Sean Penn has appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert smoking cigarettes while also saying that he was on the “Ambien train”.

The Oscar-winning actor said that he was still feeling the effects of an Ambien he had previously taken while he was being interviewed by Colbert.

Penn said to the host, “I’m doing well. You’ve inherited a little of the Ambien I had to take to get to sleep after a red-eye last night.”

Then Colbert asked, “So in other words, you’re still a little bit on the Ambien train right now?” to which Penn replied, “A little bit.”

Soon after, he pulled out a cigarette and lit up while Colbert pulled out an ashtray for him.

When Colbert encouraged Penn to quit smoking because he wants the actor to live a long time.

Penn responded, “This is job security for oncologists.”

Colbert also brought up Penn’s recent comments about straying from acting because he hasn’t been enjoying it as much.

“The greatest thing that an actor can bring to the party is to play well with others—it’s the collaboration—and I increasingly don’t play well with others,” he told Colbert.

As a result, he explained, it’s “become less enjoyable.”

“I love that process when I love it, but I’m not loving it anymore and that’s really why I finally came around to writing a novel because I didn’t have collaborators,” he admits. “I was never disappointed with me.”

The actor’s interview with Colbert was slated to promote his debut novel, Bob Honey Who Just Do Stuff: A Novel, which chronicles the life of an American businessman and part-time assassin.

This TV moment is definitely up there with Burt Reynolds’ recent Today show appearance.
