Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

As well as generally fucking with your expectations, Atlanta likes to assume you have a strong knowledge of memes.

The latest to get name-checked is Sammy Sosa's bleached skin, which was referenced in the episode 'Teddy Perkins' when Darius suggested Ern and Alfred Google 'sammy sosa hat' to describe what the creepy guy he was trying to buy a piano off of looked like.

The photo in question was taken from an ESPN interview with Major League Baseball star Sammy Sosa that aired in 2017.

It became a meme in part due to the pink shirt and fedora Sosa chose to wear for the sit-down, but mainly due to concerns that the player, a black man, had cosmetically-altered his skin's complexion due to body image issues.

“It’s a cream that I have, that I use to soften (my skin), but has bleached me some," he said in the interview when asked about his drastically different appearance, but side-by-side comparisons of how Sosa used to look suggested something more egregious than a cream had been used.
