From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Samantha Bee has jumped to the defence of the woman who accused Aziz Ansari of sexual misconduct.
The actor was discussing the babe.net interview in which a Brooklyn photographer recounted her experience of a recent date with Ansari which, she alleges, almost became “sexual assault” back in his apartment. Ansari has since responded to the article expressing his “surprise and concern” to be told the woman had felt violated via text the next day.
“I believe that I was taken advantage of by Aziz,” the woman said, adding that the Master of None star had either failed to notice or ignore her non-verbal discomfort.
While some - including Whoopi Goldberg - have criticised the accuser, as well as its article, for seemingly denting the proactive results achieved by the TimesUp movement, Full Frontal host Bee refused to hold back in her alternative take of supporting the anonymous woman known only as the pseudonym of 'Grace.'
“A lot of people are worried about Aziz's career which no one is trying to end because, again, we know the difference between a rapist, a workplace a harasser and an Aziz Ansari,” she said, adding: “That doesn't mean we have to be happy about any of them.”
Bee expressed how women setting a higher standard for sex that's not rape“ and highlighted the irony of Ansari writing a book ”on how to sex good“ referring to 2015's Modern Romance.
The host ended with a message aimed directly at men without directly mentioning Ansari's name: “If you say you're a feminist then f*** like a feminist - and if you don't want to do that take off your f***ing pin because we are not your accessories.”
