Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

RuPaul’s Drag Race stars are sending messages of support to Chi Chi DeVayne, who has been hospitalised with suspected kidney failure.

DeVayne – an American drag queen and reality star – is currently undergoing tests to find out out why her blood pressure is high. She also revealed that she has tested negative for Covid-19.

“I have high blood pressure and they’ve said that I’m going through kidney failure,” she told her fans on Instagram.

“So tomorrow they’re going to give me a biopsy on my kidneys and let me know what it is that’s making my blood pressure so high, so I just want to say that I love you guys.”

DeVayne – whose real name is Zavion Davenport – spent three hours on dialysis “to see if they can get [her] kidneys back functioning”.

“I let it go too long without going to the doctor and these are the consequences. Take care of your body.”

DeVayne found fame as part of RuPaul Drag Race’s eighth season, and also appeared on the third All Stars outing.

Trixie Mattel, who won the latter season, wrote: “I don’t believe in much but ALL the love and healing energy to Chi Chi Devayne! Flawless, stunning, and we need her back on the stripper pole in top form!”

UK Drag Race star Cheryl Hole added: “Let’s all join together and help our sister Chi Chi. If you can’t afford to donate, please send her well wishes and support during this time! WE LOVE YOU CHI CHI.”

Dax ExclamationPoint said: “Stop whatever you’re doing and send All the love and healing energy you can to chichi Devayne! The world needs this queen back jumping off of impossibly high platforms into splits and acting like that’s a totally normal thing to do 5 nights a week. GET WELL SOON!!!”

The Vixen, Aquaria and Kennedy Davenport also shared well wishes.
