From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

RuPaul’s Drag Race star Chi Chi DeVayne has provided an update on her health after being hospitalised with suspected kidney failure.

DeVayne – an American drag queen and reality star – said she is “better” but “drugged out” after undergoing a biopsy.

Speaking to her fans on Instagram Live, DeVayne said: “I told them I need some of that s*** they put me on so I can take it home.”

DeVayne spent three hours on dialysis “to see if they can get [her] kidneys back functioning”.

“It went by smooth – they injected me with some stuff before I went in and I didn’t feel a thing,” she said.

DeVayne – whose real name is Zavion Davenport – rose to fame in the eighth season of RuPaul Drag Race, and also appeared on the third All Stars outing.

She told her fans she is “ready to get back to doing what I love”, adding: ”I’m gonna fight to survive of course but I’ve been fighting too mentally, because this is a new experience for me. But I got it under control. I’m gonna be okay.”

Following news of DeVayne’s hospitalisation, Drag Race stars Trixie Mattel, Cheryl Hole and Dax ExclamationPoint sent messages of support.

“Thanks to my Drag Race sisters for putting out a message saying I needed help, I love you guys so much, I never expected for y’all to show up.”

Upon being admitted to hospital, DeVayne had said: “I let it go too long without going to the doctor and these are the consequences. Take care of your body.”

The Vixen, Aquaria and Kennedy Davenport also shared well wishes.
