From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Watching the current US Presidential Election unfold is something that will never cease to amaze; an ex-The Apprentice star vs another Clinton hated by various sectors of America, could it be any stranger?

The answer is yes, it definitely could be. Because no longer are just real people endorsing candidates, fictional creations are too, including the likes of Homer Simpson and Parks and Recreation’s Ron Swanson.

The latter’s endorsement was revealed by actor Nick Offerman, who is apparently “frequently asked how Ron Swanson would weigh in on this election.” He Tweeted out his response.

Ron Swanson's thought on the US election, according to Nick Offerman

Ron wouldn’t think much of Trump. First of all, he’d be very sad that a businessman entered politics. Huge step backwards. He had it made in the private sector and he blew it! Doesn’t speak well of his decision making. Second, he went bankrupt 4-6 times, depending on who you believe. Ron does not like businessmen getting bailed out by taxpayers. Third, Trump disrespects women. Ron likes women. Because they are human beings and deserve to be treated with basic dignity. Fourth, his boys are fatuous suck-ups with slick hair.

Ron would not like Hillary either. She is a career politician. Ron has no love of career politicians. But he would certainly vote Hillary over Trump, if he had to choose between the two. Or he would write in Merle Haggard or Willie Nelson.

Meanwhile, the Presidential election has been mocked in various forms of media over the last few days, from Family Guy, to Saturday Night Live. Plus, Will.i.am made a song about it.
