Hit teen drama Riverdale has finally returned to Netflix in the UK, after finishing its fourth season prematurely last year due to the pandemic.

However, fans have been left in tears by two heart-breaking twists in the season five premiere.

Spoilers for “Chapter Seventy-Seven: Climax” follow…

In the episode, centred around a prom, the Riverdale High gang are confronted with the fact that their high school tenure together is coming to an end.

In one scene, Archie (KJ Apa) admits to his girlfriend Veronica (Camila Mendes) that he had kissed Betty (Lili Reinhart) in season four, and had penned the romantic song for Betty, not her.

The couple break up after the admission, leaving Veronica devastated.

Elsewhere in the episode, another fan-favourite couple, Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) and Toni Topaz (Vanessa Morgan) seem set for a break-up because of Cheryl’s grandmother, who despises Topaz’s family.

Fans expressed their dismay over the two ruined relationships on social media.

“I'M CRYING FOR CHONI and varchie,” wrote one viewer.

“I’m really going through it,” wrote another. “Like, why the hell am I crying over a RIVERDALE episode?”

Riverdale is available to stream on Netflix, with new episodes released weekly.
