From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Regina King has shared some cryptic details about Watchmen days after HBO released a brief look at the new series.

The new show, from Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof, is said to be a “remix” of Alan Moore’s beloved graphic novel that also stars Jeremy Irons, and If Beale Street Could Talk star King – who won Best Supporting Actress at this year’s Oscars ceremony – teased what to expect in an interview with The Independent.

“Damon’s definitely going to shake things up,” she said when asked what Lindelof will bring to the material. “He’s definitely touching on subject matter that is, like Beale Street in some ways, relatable and relevant. He’s doing an amazing job of finding the levity in a serious space. I’m talking around things. I just feel like, every now and then, when I’m asked about it, some representative from HBO’s gonna drop down from behind me. But I’m having a fantastic time.”

She added: “I got to see Jeremy Irons yesterday. I hadn’t seen him since we’ve been shooting. We actually haven’t had a scene together, so that was quite fun.”

When asked about HBO’s long-term plans for the show, King said: “I think that HBO wants to see what the response is going to be for the first season, but they seem to be very happy with the episodes that they’ve been seeing. I definitely know that there is nothing like this on TV.

“Damon seems to be very excited. He’s just so smart, and despite him having such dark visions and stories, he is one of the most fun people I have ever been around. The guy can dance his ass off too”

King worked with Lindelof on the second and third seasons of The Leftovers, which drew to a conclusion in 2017. She revealed that she only discovered that her Beale Street director, Barry Jenkins, worked n the writers’ room during her time on the show.

“I had no idea,” she said. “He says I actually met him, but I don’t remember.”

Watchmen begins on HBO later this year. Two of our writers will be following along with a weekly podcast – you can find updates here.
