Prince is to make a guest appearance on hit US comedy New Girl after the Super Bowl, it has been confirmed.

The episode will air next month on Fox, immediately after the most-watched TV event of the year comes to a close. In “Party Time”, Zooey Deschanel’s offbeat character Jess is invited to a mansion party hosted by the music icon and her friends are intent on crashing.

Brett Baer and Dave Finkel, executive producers of New Girl, told E! News: “Prince contacted us last season because he’s a huge fan. He knows everything about the show. He contacted Zooey and Hannah (Simone) directly and asked to do the show. We couldn’t work it out last year. But when the Super Bowl thing was floated, it was perfect timing.”

The pair continued to explain Prince’s specific demands. “He said, ‘I want to be involved in the show in a real way and I want to help [characters) Nick and Jess with their relationship.

“His thing was all about getting to Jess and trying to bring out this inner part of her that hadn’t been brought to the forefront. The words 'hip tips' was sort of the thing. He put it, 'I think I can give her some hip tips!'”

Prince has a run of acting, writing and directing credits to his name, as well as “crazy comic instincts”. “He’s got a very quiet, wry sense of humor but he kills,” Finkel said. “He knows that his value as a persona is doing as little as possible, but those little possible moments he knows exactly how to play it and exactly how to give.”

Actors Adam Brody and Linda Cardellini are among other guest stars due to feature on New Girl in future episodes. Cardellini, star of Freaks and Geeks, Mad Men and ER, will play Jess’ sister, a “wild card” who “enjoys making trouble”.

An episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which won the Golden Globe Award for Best Comedy on Sunday night, will also be broadcast after the Super Bowl. Super Bowl-winning quarterback Joe Theismann will guest star alongside regulars Fred Armisen and Dean Winters.
